One of the Frequently Asked Questions around our congregation is:
Why is Pastor Mac leaving? Clergy in the United Methodist Church are ordained to serve God by Word, Service, Order, and Sacrament. It is understood that we submit our lives to a church that believes in and values itinaracy.
Itineracy of the Methodist preachers, beginning with John Wesley himself, was the result of Wesley’s principle that he should preach wherever he could do the most good. Or to state it another way, he should preach wherever there was a need and especially where the need was greatest. (Richard P. Heitzenrater in Connectionalism: Ecclesiology, Mission and Identity, United Methodism in American Culture).
What we have seen and know of Pastor Mac, he has a passion for serving Jesus. He has a gift of preaching and a compassion for people. By his ordination, Pastor Mac is part of a church that values itineracy. By his calling, Pastor Mac is in the same line with John Wesley, “desiring to preach wherever he could do the most good.”
While it is our loss that Pastor Mac leaves Cypress UMC, he will find a place to preach the gospel and use his gifts for the people in Navasota and Anderson. I believe the Kingdom of God will grow with Mac’s leadership in those two communities.
I would not be truthful if I did not admit that there will be a sense of grief as Mac and Laura leave us. These two people welcomed me and my family with open arms, warmth and good food. They helped us to make a transition to CUMC. There always is some grief when a well loved person moves on.
I know you will join me as I pray that God will be with Mac and Laura during this time of transition and time of renewal.
Pastor Mac and Laura: May the Lord Bless you and keep you!
See you Sunday,
Jerome
